Timeless Pocket Watches
Unlike wristwatches, pocket watches are meant to be placed on coat or trousers pockets. They usually come with a chain that attaches it to a belt loop or waistcoat. Pocket watches are analog-display timepieces in contrast to the many modern digital displays.
Pocket watches that come with chains are usually decorated on those chains with ornaments. These chains and their ornaments are also called fobs. Most pocket watches have hinged covers that you only open when checking the time. The cover is primarily meant to protect the pocket watch from damage and scratches. They often have fasteners that goes through a buttonhole to attach them well. This reminds us of train conductors.
Pocket watches have been in circulation long before wristwatches came into fashion. The first mention of new pocket watches ever made was in a letter written to the Marchese di Manta from an Italian clock maker named Bartholomew Manfredi in the year 1462. The letter was a proposal to make the Marchese a pocket clock that was better than the one owned by the Duke of Modena.
The first reference to a pocket clock was made as early as the 1400s, but the first known pocket clock that fits the pocket, was in 1510 by a German locksmith named Peter Heinlein. From then on he continued making such watches until it became a must-have all throughout Europe.
Pocket watches come in two varieties. There is the open-faced that can be of the wind-up variety called a winding pocket watches. The other is the covered pocket watch or the hunter-type version. Since the pocket watchs separate second dial is normally placed close to six oclock, the pendant (also known as the stem of the open face pocket watch) is at twelve oclock. The hunter stem then is at three oclock. Reading a pocket watch means you have to position the watch at a ninety-degree angle with the stem pointed to the right.
Todays pocket watches uses the quartz movement feature regardless of whether it is open-faced or hunter case.
While pocket watches are not as common or popular as the modern wristwatches, theyre still deemed a classy, attractive, and prestigious timepieces that double as a decorative wardrobe accessory as well.
